War Games To Learn Security Concepts

It could be that you are an "Elite Hacker" who thinks he has learned enough and is able to compromise any system at hand, But may be you can't, or may be you are just a guy who is looking around to grasp some security concepts to start getting in to this field. No matter who is reading this, If you are reading this then you do want to know what lies ahead.

It has been about two months and I have been constantly learning new stuff everyday without resting cause there's just too much to learn before I graduate. A friend of mine on the Internet who also happens to be a guy involved in Computer Security asked me If I have tested what I have learned recently on a test bed and I thought to myself I really haven't, Have I?. He referred me to a website called OverTheWire: Wargames. I was pretty curious because I never actually tested my skills on Wargames. And I started digging.

When you first head over to this website, You are presented with the Introduction about the service:

The wargames offered by the OverTheWire community can help you to learn and practice security concepts in the form of fun-filled games.

This website provides about 12 online games which contact several levels and are named like this:
  • Vortex
  • Semtex
  • Krypton
  • Bandit
  • Leviathan
  • Narnia
  • Behemoth
  • Utumno
  • Maze
  • Manpage
  • Natas
  • Drifter
I have already started playing these games and I assure everyone that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to complete these levels, Why? Because these games prepare you for where security weaknesses reside in a system and how they are exploited and all you need to do is do some research in order to learn everything that these games are trying to teach you. The fun part is that you learn to use Linux.

According to Website, It's recommended to play the games in this manner as mentioned:
  1. Bandit
  2. Leviathan or Natas or Krypton
  3. Narnia
  4. Behemoth
  5. Utumno
  6. Maze
  7. (The rest as you want)
If you are a newbie and wanting to learn some security, I highly suggest that you go and play these games cause I'm going to and I will also post solutions to every level I complete on these 12 games. Wish me Luck!
